Why do we dream?

1. To satisfy our wishes.

Sigmund Freud.

-What we experience in our dreams is “manifest content”. The manifest content symbolized the latent content (which is hidden).

-The latent content are our subconscious drives (sex and aggression) that would be problematic if acted out in real life.

Safety valve for our subconscious drives
2. To file memories.

-Memories/experiences are being “filed” into proper spots, they may flash into our minds and thus create dreams.
3. To develop and preserve neural pathways.

Dreams give the brain stimulation while sleeping in order to develop neural networks.

Evidence: infants and children experience more REM sleep than adults.
4. activation-synthesis theory

neural activity from the brain stem produces random thoughts and stimuli

our brains assemble the thoughts into a dream.
5. Dreams help develop schemas.

-Dreams allow us to evaluate the organization of our ideas.

Problem solving.

-Children tend to dream in “slide-show”

-Adults dream in a more complex, narrative story fashion.
